Swimming Pool Volume Calculator
Find how much water your pool holds so every chemical dose and turnover figure is right. Choose rectangular, circular or oval, enter the dimensions in feet or meters, and add a shallow and deep depth if the floor slopes. The tool returns cubic feet, US gallons and liters, plus the surface area and average depth it used.
How to calculate pool volume
- Pick the unit toggle at the top right: feet (ft) or meters (m).
- Choose the pool Shape: Rectangular, Circular or Oval.
- For rectangular or oval, enter Length and Width; for circular, enter the Diameter.
- Enter the Shallow depth, then the Deep depth if the floor slopes (leave Deep depth blank for a flat bottom).
- Read the gallons and liters, plus surface area, average depth and volume.
- Press Copy result to save the summary line.
Examples
32 by 16 ft rectangular pool
Rectangular, 32 ft long, 16 ft wide, 3 ft shallow, 7 ft deep
512 sq ft surface, 5 ft average depth, 2,560 cu ft, 19,150 gallons (72,491 liters)
30 by 15 ft oval pool
Oval, 30 ft long, 15 ft wide, 3 ft shallow, 8 ft deep
353.4 sq ft surface, 5.5 ft average depth, 1,943.9 cu ft, 14,541 gallons (55,044 liters)
18 ft round flat-bottom pool
Circular, 18 ft diameter, 4 ft depth, Deep depth left blank
254.5 sq ft surface, 4 ft average depth, 1,017.9 cu ft, 7,614 gallons (28,823 liters)
Frequently asked questions
How do I find the number of gallons in my pool?
Multiply the surface area by the average depth to get cubic feet, then multiply by 7.480519 gallons per cubic foot. This tool does that for a rectangle, circle or ellipse automatically.
What is the average depth of a pool?
For a sloped floor it is the shallow depth plus the deep depth divided by two. A flat-bottom pool uses its single depth, so you can leave the Deep depth field blank.
How do I measure a round or oval pool?
For a round pool measure the diameter across the center. For an oval measure the full length and full width; the tool treats it as an ellipse, which is why an oval holds less than a rectangle of the same length and width.
Can I enter dimensions in meters?
Yes. Flip the unit toggle to m and the tool converts every field. It still reports the result in US gallons and liters, since those are the units chemical and heater math usually use.
Does the result include the area below the waterline only?
Yes. Enter depths measured to the water surface, not the top of the coping, so the volume reflects the water you actually treat, filter and heat.
How accurate is the average-depth method for a deep end?
It is exact when the floor slopes in a straight line from shallow to deep. Pools with a flat shallow section, a hopper or steps hold a little less, so treat the figure as a close working estimate.
Is my pool data sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you type is uploaded, stored or logged, so you can use it offline once the page has loaded.
What are US gallons versus imperial gallons?
This tool reports US gallons, where one cubic foot is about 7.48 gallons. An imperial (UK) gallon is larger, so a UK figure would be roughly 17 percent lower for the same volume.
What can I do once I know the volume?
Use it to size chlorine, salt and pH adjustments and to check pump turnover. See the related pool chlorine, pool salt and pool heater calculators, all keyed to your gallons.
