Drywall Mud and Joint Compound Calculator

Estimate how much joint compound a drywall job needs. Enter the total drywall area and the number of coats to get the pounds of mud and the number of premixed boxes.

How to estimate drywall mud

  1. Enter the total drywall area in square feet.
  2. Set the number of coats, usually three for taping, filling and finishing.
  3. Read off the pounds of compound and the number of premixed boxes to buy.

Examples

1000 sq ft of drywall, 3 coats

Area 1000 sq ft, 3 coats, 0.0533 lb per sq ft per coat
159.9 lb of compound, 3 boxes

Frequently asked questions

How much joint compound do I need per square foot?

A common rule is about 0.16 pound of compound per square foot for a full three coat finish, which is roughly 0.0533 pound per square foot per coat. This calculator uses that rate by default.

How many coats of mud does drywall need?

Most jobs use three coats: a tape coat that beds the joint tape, a fill coat that builds it out, and a thin finish coat that is sanded smooth. A higher level finish can add another coat.

How big is a box of premixed mud?

All-purpose premixed compound is sold in a box or pail of about 4.5 gallons, weighing roughly 61.7 pounds. This calculator divides the total weight by that size and rounds up to whole boxes.

Is this an exact figure?

No, it is an estimate. Real usage varies a lot with the taper's skill, joint count, fastener spacing, corner beads and any skim coating or texture, so buy a little extra and keep the receipt.

Does this cover tape, screws or texture?

No. This estimates only the joint compound. Drywall sheets, joint tape, corner bead, screws and any spray texture are figured separately from the wall area and your chosen finish level.
