Frequently asked questions

What does the waist to hip ratio measure?

It compares the size of your waist to your hips and is a simple proxy for how much fat you carry around your middle. A higher ratio means more central or abdominal fat, which research links to higher cardiovascular and metabolic risk.

What is a healthy waist to hip ratio?

The World Health Organization treats 0.90 or below as low risk for men and 0.80 or below for women. Men from 0.91 to 0.99 and women from 0.81 to 0.85 are moderate risk, while 1.0 or more for men and 0.86 or more for women is high risk.

How do I measure my waist and hips correctly?

Measure your waist at its narrowest point, usually just above the belly button, and your hips at the widest part of your buttocks. Keep the tape level and snug but not tight, and use the same unit for both measurements.

Why does the calculator ask for my sex?

Men and women carry fat differently, so the WHO uses different thresholds for each. Selecting your sex applies the correct risk bands. The ratio itself, waist divided by hips, is the same calculation for everyone.
