Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate a cat's age in human years?
The first year counts as about 15 human years, the second year brings the total to about 24, and every year after that adds roughly 4 more. A 5-year-old cat is 24 plus three extra years at 4 each, giving 36.
How are partial years or months handled?
Fractional ages are interpolated within the current band, so a 1.5-year-old cat is 15 plus half of the 9-year second-year gain, which is 19.5. Enter months as a decimal, for example 6 months is 0.5.
Is the multiply-by-7 rule correct for cats?
No. Cats mature far faster in their first two years than a flat times-seven rule suggests, so that shortcut understates a kitten and overstates a senior cat. The staged curve here tracks feline development much more closely.
How old is a 3-year-old cat in human years?
About 28 human years. That is 24 for the first two years plus 4 more for the third, which the calculator returns as 28.
When is a cat considered senior?
Cats are usually called senior around 11 years, which lands near 60 human years on this curve. Many indoor cats stay healthy well into their late teens and early twenties.
Does breed or lifestyle change the result?
The formula is a single general curve and does not adjust for breed, indoor versus outdoor living or body condition, all of which affect real aging. Treat the number as a friendly estimate rather than a medical figure.
What ages can I enter?
Any age of zero or more, including decimals. Negative numbers are rejected. There is no upper cap, so you can enter a very old cat, though the curve keeps adding 4 human years per cat year past age 2.
Does this replace a vet visit?
No. It is an approximation for curiosity and comparison. Your vet can weigh your cat's teeth, weight, coat and organ health to judge its true life stage.
