How to estimate sweater yarn yardage

  1. Choose the finished size band, from baby up to adult extra large.
  2. Choose the yarn weight you plan to knit or crochet with.

Frequently asked questions

How much yarn does a sweater take?

A plain adult medium pullover runs roughly 1000 to 1500 yards depending on yarn weight. This tool reads a mid-range figure from a size-by-weight table to give a quick estimate.

Why does heavier yarn need fewer yards?

Thicker yarn covers the same area of fabric with less length, so a bulky sweater needs fewer yards than the same sweater in fingering weight, even though it weighs more.

How accurate is this estimate?

It is a rough planning figure, not an exact number. Cables, colorwork, length, ease and your gauge all change the total, so always check the actual pattern before buying.

How do I convert the yards to meters?

Multiply yards by 0.9144. The tool already shows both, but the conversion is handy when a yarn label lists only meters per skein and you need to compare.

Should I buy an extra skein?

Yes, buy at least one spare from the same dye lot. It covers swatching, a longer body or sleeves, and repairs, and is far easier than running short near the end.
