Crochet Gauge Calculator for Stitches and Rows

Use a crochet gauge swatch to find how many stitches to start with and how many rows to work for any width and height. Enter the swatch counts and your target size.

How to use a crochet gauge

  1. Work a swatch and count the stitches and rows over a measured width and height.
  2. Enter those counts and the finished width and height you want.
  3. Read the starting stitches and total rows, then copy the result.

Examples

4 stitches and 3 rows per inch to a 20 by 30 inch piece

16 sts over 4 in, 12 rows over 4 in, target 20 x 30 in
80 starting stitches, 90 rows

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate crochet stitches from gauge?

Divide the stitches in your swatch by its width to get stitches per inch, then multiply by the finished width you want and round to the nearest whole stitch.

Is crochet gauge the same as knitting gauge?

The math is identical: stitches per inch times target width. Only the terms differ, since crochet counts stitches and rows worked rather than cast-on stitches on a needle.

Do I need to measure rows too?

Only if you want a row count. Leave the row fields blank and the tool returns just the stitches per inch and starting stitches. Add rows and height to also get total rows.

Should I measure over 4 inches or 1 inch?

Measure over 4 inches or more and let the tool divide. Counting over a larger span averages out small irregularities and gives a far more accurate stitches-per-inch figure.

Is this an exact stitch count or an estimate?

It is an estimate from your swatch. Real projects vary with tension, hook size and stitch pattern, so round to your pattern repeat and add any border or turning stitches.
