Candle Wax Calculator

Planning a pour? Estimate how much wax your candles need from the container volume, number of candles, wax type and fill level. Results come in ounces, pounds and grams.

How to estimate candle wax

  1. Enter the number of candles and the container volume in fluid ounces.
  2. Pick your wax type and the fill percent you want.
  3. Read the wax per candle and total in ounces, pounds and grams, then copy it.

Examples

4 soy candles in 8 oz jars at 90% fill

4 candles, 8 oz containers, soy wax, 90% fill
6.192 oz per candle, 24.768 oz total, 1.548 lb

Frequently asked questions

How much wax do I need for one candle?

Multiply the container volume in fluid ounces by your fill percent, then by the wax density factor (about 0.86 for soy). An 8 oz jar at 90% fill in soy needs roughly 6.2 oz of wax.

Why is the wax weight less than the container volume?

Volume is measured in fluid ounces but wax is sold by weight, and wax is lighter than water. A density factor near 0.86 to 0.92 converts the usable volume into the weight of wax to buy.

What fill percent should I use?

Around 90% is typical so the wick and wax do not overflow the rim. This tool defaults to 90%, and you can lower it for a deeper headspace or raise it for a fuller jar.

Does fragrance oil count toward this weight?

No. This figure is wax only. Fragrance is added as a percent of the wax weight, so size the wax first and then calculate the fragrance load separately.

Which wax types are supported?

Soy, paraffin, beeswax and coconut, each with its own density factor. If your wax differs, pick the closest type or treat the result as a close starting estimate.
