Candle Wax Calculator

Before a pour it is easy to buy too little wax or a wasteful surplus, and this tool fixes that. It converts the volume of your containers into the weight of wax to order by accounting for the fact that wax is sold by weight but jars are measured in fluid ounces. Enter your batch and read the wax per candle plus the batch total in ounces, pounds and grams.

How to estimate candle wax

  1. Enter the 'Number of candles' you plan to pour.
  2. Enter the 'Container volume' in fluid ounces (the jar or tin capacity).
  3. Choose your wax from the 'Wax type' menu: soy, paraffin, beeswax or coconut.
  4. Set the 'Fill percent', which defaults to 90 to leave headspace below the rim.
  5. Read 'Wax per candle' and the total in ounces, pounds and grams, then use 'Copy result'.

Frequently asked questions

How much wax do I need for one candle?

Multiply the container volume in fluid ounces by your fill percent, then by the wax density factor (about 0.86 for soy). An 8 oz jar at 90% fill in soy works out to 8 times 0.9 times 0.86, which is 6.192 oz of wax.

Why is the wax weight less than the container volume?

Volume is measured in fluid ounces but wax is bought by weight, and melted wax is lighter than the same volume of water. The tool applies a density factor between 0.86 and 0.92 to turn usable volume into the weight of solid wax you need.

What density does each wax type use?

Soy is 0.86, paraffin and coconut are both 0.9, and beeswax is 0.92 ounces of wax per fluid ounce of container. Beeswax is the densest of the four, so the same jar needs a little more of it by weight.

What fill percent should I use?

Around 90 percent is typical so the melt pool and wick clip do not spill over the rim. The tool defaults to 90, but you can lower it for a deeper headspace or raise it toward 100 for a jar filled to the top.

Does fragrance oil count toward this weight?

No. The figure is wax only. Fragrance is dosed as a percent of the wax weight, so size the wax first with this tool, then calculate the fragrance load separately from the wax total it gives you.

Which units does it report?

It shows wax per candle in ounces plus the batch total in ounces, pounds and grams at once. That makes it easy whether your wax is bagged in pounds or your scale reads in grams.

What if my wax is not one of the four listed?

Pick the closest match by density. Most container blends sit between 0.86 and 0.92, so choosing soy or paraffin gives a close estimate. Treat the number as a buying guide and keep a little extra on hand.

Are these values exact?

They are close estimates. Real yield shifts slightly with pour temperature, additives and how tightly you fill, so round up when ordering. The math is deterministic, so the same inputs always give the same weights.
