Most candles sit in a 6 to 10 percent load by wax weight, and 8 percent is a reliable starting point. A higher load throws more scent but can weep, cloud the surface or shorten the burn, so raise it in small steps and test.

At 8 percent, one pound (16 ounces) of wax takes about 1.28 ounces of oil, and at 10 percent it takes about 1.6 ounces. Enter your wax weight in ounces and the tool works this out for any load you set.

By weight. The load is a percent of the wax weight, not a volume, so weigh the oil on the same scale you use for the wax. Measuring oil by fluid ounces or milliliters gives a different amount because oils vary in density.
