How to calculate lap time

  1. Enter the track length in miles or kilometres.
  2. Enter your average lap speed, or a known lap time instead.
  3. Add the number of laps to read the total race time.

Examples

2.5 mile track at 120 mph

2.5 mi, 120 mph
1:15.000 per lap

Same lap over 50 laps

75 s lap, 50 laps
total 1:02:30

Frequently asked questions

How is lap time calculated from speed?

Lap time in seconds equals the track length in miles divided by the average speed in mph, times 3600. A kilometre track length is converted to miles first.

Can I work backward from a known lap time?

Yes. Enter the lap time in seconds directly and skip the track length and speed. The tool then only needs a lap count to give the total race time.

What does the lap time format mean?

Lap time is shown as minutes, seconds and thousandths, for example 1:15.000. Race time is shown as hours, minutes and seconds, for example 1:02:30.

Does this account for pit stops or fuel?

No. It assumes a constant average lap. Use the pit stop time calculator and race fuel calculator to factor in stops and refuelling.

Is average speed the same as top speed?

No. Average speed covers the whole lap including corners and braking zones, so it is well below the top speed reached on the straights.
