Frequently asked questions

How is average lap speed calculated?

Average speed in mph equals the track length in miles divided by the lap time in hours, where lap time in hours is the lap seconds divided by 3600. A kilometre length is converted to miles first.

How do you convert mph to km/h?

Multiply miles per hour by 1.609344 to get kilometres per hour. The tool shows both figures so you do not need to convert by hand.

Is this the same as top speed?

No. Average lap speed blends the full lap, including corners and braking, so it is lower than the peak speed reached on the straights.

What lap time format should I use?

Enter the lap time in plain seconds. For a 1 minute 15 second lap, enter 75. For 1 minute 30, enter 90.

Can I get the lap time from a target speed instead?

Yes, use the lap time calculator. It takes a track length and an average speed and returns the lap time and total race time.
