Speed, Distance and Time Calculator
Speed, distance and time are tied together by speed = distance / time, so knowing any two fixes the third. Pick which value to solve for, enter the two you have, and the calculator returns the answer in the units you choose. Each field carries its own unit, so a distance in miles and a speed in km/h still work side by side.
How to calculate speed, distance or time
- Use the 'Solve for' menu to choose Speed, Distance or Time as the unknown.
- Enter the two known values in the fields that stay visible.
- Set the unit beside each value, choosing from km/h, mph and m/s for speed, km, mi and m for distance, and h, min and s for time.
- Pick the output unit next to 'Result unit' for the value you are solving.
- Read the highlighted answer in the result cards and click Copy to save all three.
Examples
Average speed of a trip
Solve Speed: distance = 100 km, time = 2 h
speed = 50 km/h
Distance covered at a set speed
Solve Distance: speed = 50 km/h, time = 2 h
distance = 100 km
Time for a drive in imperial units
Solve Time: speed = 60 mph, distance = 30 mi (min)
time = 30 min
Frequently asked questions
What is the speed distance time formula?
Speed equals distance divided by time (s = d / t). Rearranged, distance = speed x time and time = distance / speed. The 'Solve for' menu applies whichever version you need.
Can I mix units like miles and km/h?
Yes. Each value has its own unit selector and every input is converted through SI (metres, seconds, metres per second) before solving, so a distance in miles paired with a speed in km/h is no problem.
How do I convert km/h to m/s?
Divide by 3.6, so 36 km/h is 10 m/s. In the tool, choose Speed as the result and set the speed unit to m/s to see the converted value directly.
Does this give average or instantaneous speed?
It gives average speed over the whole trip: total distance divided by total time. It cannot capture acceleration, stops or changes in pace along the way.
Why must time and speed be above zero?
Solving for speed divides by time, and solving for time divides by speed. A zero divisor is undefined, so the tool rejects zero or negative time and zero or negative speed in those cases.
What are the default units?
Speed defaults to km/h, distance to km and time to hours, matching the everyday km/h driving case. You can change any of them independently before or after entering values.
How precise are the answers?
Results are rounded to nine decimal places, so clean inputs give clean answers while awkward conversions stay accurate. The math runs in standard double precision.
Can it convert a running pace like minutes per mile?
Not directly. This tool works in speed rather than pace, so it returns values like mph or m/s. For minutes per mile or per kilometre you would want a dedicated pace converter instead.
Is my input sent anywhere?
No. Every calculation runs locally in your browser, so the numbers you type are never uploaded to a server.
