Pressure is force spread over an area, written P = F / A. Frequently asked questions
What is the formula for pressure?
Pressure equals force divided by area, P = F / A. The SI unit is the pascal (Pa), which is one newton spread over one square metre. Rearranged, force = pressure x area and area = force / pressure.
Which two values do I need to enter?
Exactly two of force, area and pressure. The 'Known values' menu picks the pair, and the third quantity is fully determined by P = F / A, so there is never any guesswork.
What units are supported?
Force in newtons (N) or pounds-force (lbf), area in square metres, square centimetres or square inches, and pressure in pascals, kilopascals or psi. Each field has its own unit selector.
Can I mix metric and imperial units?
Yes. Every input is converted to SI base units (N, m^2, Pa) before solving, then converted back to your chosen output units, so a force in newtons with an area in square inches works fine.
How are pounds-force and psi converted?
One pound-force equals 4.4482216 newtons and one psi equals 6894.757 pascals (one pound-force per square inch). These exact factors keep imperial answers accurate to nine decimal places before rounding.
Why can't area be zero?
When you supply force and area to find pressure, a zero area would mean dividing by zero, which is undefined. The tool rejects that case and shows an error rather than returning infinity.
Is this gauge pressure or absolute pressure?
Neither in particular. The calculator does pure P = F / A arithmetic and does not add or subtract atmospheric pressure, so treat the result as whatever your force and area represent.
How precise are the results?
Answers are rounded to nine decimal places, which is far tighter than most engineering work needs. Very small or very large numbers stay accurate because the math runs in double precision.
Is my data kept private?
Yes. The calculation happens entirely in your browser with no server round trip, so the numbers you enter never leave your device.
