Frequently asked questions

How long does light take to reach Earth from the Sun?

About 499.005 seconds, or 8.31675 minutes, since the Sun sits roughly one astronomical unit (1 AU) away. That is why solar events are always seen with an eight minute delay.

What is the light travel time formula?

Time equals distance divided by the speed of light, t = d / c, where c is 299,792,458 metres per second. The distance is first converted to metres, so kilometres, miles, AU, light years and parsecs all use their exact metre value.

Which units can I enter?

Kilometres, miles, astronomical units (AU), light years and parsecs. One AU is 1.495978707e11 m, one light year is 9.4607304725808e15 m and one parsec is 3.0856775814913673e16 m.

Why does one light year equal one year of travel time?

A light year is defined as the distance light covers in one Julian year of 365.25 days, so dividing that distance by the speed of light returns exactly 1 year in the results.

What is a parsec in travel time?

One parsec is about 3.2616 light years, so light needs roughly 3.26 years to cross it. Proxima Centauri at 1.301 parsecs takes about 4.24329 years, which the tool also breaks down into 1549.86 days.

Why do very short distances read zero minutes or years?

Each output is rounded, so a value smaller than the last displayed digit shows as 0. One mile of light travel is about 0.000005 seconds, which rounds to 0 in the minutes, days and years cards.

Does this account for the expanding universe or a medium?

No. It is a plain distance divided by speed in a vacuum. For distant galaxies, cosmological expansion makes lookback time more involved, and light slows slightly in glass, water or air rather than a vacuum.

How accurate are the results?

The speed of light is an exact defined constant, so accuracy is limited only by your distance value and the rounding shown. Seconds are rounded to six decimals and the smaller units to nine.

No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you type is uploaded, logged or stored on a server.
