Deck joists and screws: how the framing count is worked out

How joist spacing sets the number of joists across a deck, why a closing joist is added, and how board over joist crossings drive the screw count.

Counting joists across the width

Joists are the parallel framing members that carry the decking. This calculator lays them across the deck width at the spacing you choose on center, then adds one more joist to close the far edge. It converts the width to inches, divides by the joist spacing and rounds up, so a 12 foot wide deck at 16 inch spacing gives nine bays plus a closing joist for ten joists. Tightening the spacing to 12 inches on the same deck raises the count and stiffens the frame.

Why joist spacing matters for the boards

Spacing is not only a framing decision, it limits how the deck boards perform. Boards that span too far between joists feel bouncy and can sag over time, which is why thinner or composite boards often call for 12 inch spacing rather than 16. Diagonal board layouts also shorten the effective span between supports, so they usually need closer joists as well. Choosing the spacing first, then reading the joist count, keeps the frame matched to the decking you plan to lay.

From crossings to a screw count

Every place a board passes over a joist is a fastening point, and the standard is two screws there to stop the board cupping or lifting. The calculator multiplies the board count by the joist count and then by two, so more boards or more joists both push the screw total up. A larger deck compounds this quickly, which is why a modest 280 square foot deck in the examples still needs nearly 2000 screws. Buy screws by the box and keep the surplus for repairs.

What the framing estimate leaves out

This tool sizes joists and screws for the deck field, but a real frame has more parts. Beams carry the joists, posts and footings carry the beams, and a ledger ties the deck to the house, all sized from span tables and local code. Blocking or bridging between joists, joist hangers and structural screws or bolts at the connections are separate counts too. Use this estimate to budget decking and fasteners, then confirm the structural members against an approved plan.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the calculator add one extra joist?

Spacing gives the joists inside the deck, but the far edge still needs support, so a closing joist is added at the end. That is why a nine bay layout results in ten joists rather than nine.

Does the screw count include the framing screws?

No. The screw total covers only the two per crossing that fasten boards to joists. Structural screws or bolts for beams, posts and the ledger are sized separately from a deck plan and code.
