Sleep Cycle Calculator

Wake up between sleep cycles, not in the middle of one. Tell the calculator when you need to wake up and it suggests bedtimes, or give it a bedtime and it suggests wake times, all built around the 90-minute sleep cycle plus the time it takes to fall asleep.

How to use the sleep cycle calculator

  1. Choose a mode: plan a bedtime from a wake-up time, or a wake-up time from a bedtime.
  2. Enter the time in 24-hour HH:MM format, or use the current time.
  3. Pick one of the suggested times, each labelled with full cycles and hours of sleep.

Examples

I need to wake at 07:00

Mode wake-at, time 07:00
Go to bed at 21:46 (6 cycles, 9h) or 23:16 (5 cycles, 7.5h)

I am getting into bed at 23:00

Mode sleep-at, time 23:00
Wake at 06:44 (5 cycles, 7.5h) or 08:14 (6 cycles, 9h)

Frequently asked questions

What is a sleep cycle?

A sleep cycle is one pass through the stages of sleep, from light sleep into deep sleep and then REM, lasting about 90 minutes. A full night is several cycles back to back. Most adults aim for five or six, which is roughly 7.5 to 9 hours.

Why does waking between cycles matter?

Waking near the end of a cycle, when sleep is lightest, tends to feel easier than being pulled out of deep sleep mid-cycle. Timing your alarm to land between cycles can reduce that groggy, heavy feeling known as sleep inertia.

Why does it add 14 minutes?

Cycles only start once you are actually asleep, and the average person takes around 14 minutes to drift off. The calculator adds that buffer so the suggested times line up with real cycle boundaries. You can change it if you fall asleep faster or slower.

Are these times exact for me?

No. The 90-minute cycle is an average and real cycles vary by person, age and night. Use the suggestions as a helpful target rather than a precise schedule, and adjust based on how rested you actually feel.

How many cycles or hours of sleep should I get?

Most adults do well on five to six cycles, about 7.5 to 9 hours. The calculator highlights the most rested option first and lists shorter nights too, so you can pick what fits the time you have.

Is my data kept private?

Yes. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. The times you enter are never sent to a server or stored anywhere, so nothing about your sleep leaves your device.
