Debt Snowball Calculator
Plan your debt payoff with the snowball method. List each debt, add any extra you can pay, and the calculator attacks the smallest balance first, rolling each cleared payment into the next.
How the debt snowball works
- Add each debt with its balance, interest rate and minimum payment.
- Enter the extra amount you can put toward debt each month.
- See the payoff order, the months to debt-free and the total interest.
Examples
Two cards with a 200 monthly extra
Card A 1,000 at 20% min 50, Card B 5,000 at 6% min 100, extra 200
Card A clears in month 5, Card B in month 19, debt-free in 19 months
Frequently asked questions
What is the debt snowball method?
You pay minimums on every debt and throw all extra money at the smallest balance first. When it clears, its payment rolls into the next smallest, so the amount attacking your debt grows like a snowball.
Is the snowball or avalanche method better?
The avalanche method, paying the highest rate first, saves the most interest mathematically. The snowball clears small balances fast, which builds momentum and motivation. The best method is the one you stick with.
How does the extra payment help?
Minimum payments barely dent principal because most goes to interest. Adding even a small extra each month accelerates the smallest debt, and rolling freed payments forward compounds the effect across all debts.
What if my minimum payments do not cover the interest?
If the minimums are smaller than the monthly interest, a balance can grow rather than shrink and never pays off. The calculator flags this so you know you need to raise payments or lower the rate.
Are the results financial advice?
No. These figures are estimates based on the balances, rates and payments you enter. Confirm exact terms with your lenders, and watch for fees or rate changes that can affect the plan.
