Quarter Calculator

Pick a year and month to see which quarter it lands in, labelled Q1 through Q4, along with the exact months that quarter spans. Set the fiscal year start to January for standard calendar quarters, or to another month such as April so the tool re-numbers the quarters around your financial year. It even follows a fiscal quarter that rolls into the next calendar year and shows the correct year on each month.

How to find the quarter of a date

  1. Type the Year in the first box; it defaults to the current year.
  2. Choose the Month from the dropdown, for example December.
  3. Leave 'Fiscal year starts' on January for calendar quarters, or set it to your fiscal start month like April.
  4. Read the large quarter label and the span of months shown below it.
  5. Click Copy to grab the one-line summary, such as Q4: October to December 2024.

Frequently asked questions

How are calendar quarters defined?

With the fiscal start on January, Q1 covers January to March, Q2 covers April to June, Q3 covers July to September, and Q4 covers October to December. This is the default and matches how most people talk about the four quarters of the year.

What is a fiscal quarter and how do I set one?

A fiscal year can begin in any month rather than January. Set 'Fiscal year starts' to that month and the quarters are renumbered from it, so an April start makes April the first month of Q1 and the following March the last month of Q4.

Why does a fiscal Q4 show months in the next calendar year?

When a fiscal year starts later than January, its final quarter naturally spills past December. An April fiscal year, for example, ends its Q4 in January to March of the following calendar year, so the tool prints that later year next to those months.

Which quarter is the current month in?

The Year and Month boxes start on today's date, so the tool already shows the current quarter when the page loads. Change the fiscal start if you want that same month expressed against a non-calendar year.

Does the day of the month matter?

No. A quarter is determined entirely by the month, so any day within a month falls in the same quarter. The tool asks only for the year and month for that reason.

What year do I enter for a fiscal calculation?

Enter the calendar year in which your fiscal year begins. That year labels the fiscal period, and the tool adds a year automatically to any months that carry over into the next calendar year.

Can I copy the result to paste into a report?

Yes. The Copy button puts a single tidy line on your clipboard, for instance Q2: April to June 2025, which drops cleanly into a spreadsheet, email, or planning document.

What happens with an invalid entry?

The month is chosen from a dropdown so it is always valid, and the fiscal start is likewise a menu. If a value ever falls outside the allowed range the tool shows a short message instead of a wrong quarter.

Is anything sent to a server?

No. The quarter and its month span are worked out entirely in your browser, so no dates are uploaded or stored anywhere.
