MPH vs km/h and the exact 1.609344 factor
Why miles and kilometers give different speed numbers, where each unit is used, and how the exact 1.609344 factor is defined.
Two units, one speed
Miles per hour and kilometers per hour both measure how far you travel in one hour, but they count that distance in different units. A mile is longer than a kilometer, so any speed carries a larger number when expressed in km/h. A car cruising at 60 mph is moving at about 96.56 km/h; the vehicle has not sped up, the yardstick has simply changed. Keeping that in mind stops a foreign speedometer reading from looking alarmingly fast or slow.
Where each unit is the standard
The United States and the United Kingdom post road speed limits in miles per hour, and a handful of territories follow suit. Almost every other country signs its roads in kilometers per hour, the metric standard. This split is why rental cars, imported vehicles and cross-border trips so often need a quick conversion. Cars sold internationally usually print both scales on the dial, with mph on the outer ring in some markets and km/h on the outer ring in others.
Where the 1.609344 factor comes from
Since 1959 the international yard has been defined as exactly 0.9144 meters. A mile is 1760 yards, so it equals 1760 times 0.9144, which is exactly 1609.344 meters, or 1.609344 kilometers. Divide distances by the same hour and the speed factor is identical: 1 mph equals 1.609344 km/h. Because the definition is exact rather than measured, every conversion in this tool is exact too, and the only rounding happens when the display is trimmed to six decimals.
Fast mental estimates
For a rough figure, remember that km/h is a bit over one and a half times the mph number, so add about 60 percent. A tidier trick uses the ratio 8 to 5: multiply mph by 8 and divide by 5, which lands within a fraction of the exact value. For example 50 mph times 8 is 400, divided by 5 is 80 km/h, against the exact 80.4672. These shortcuts are fine for road signs, but use the exact factor whenever accuracy matters.
