Butter stick conversion chart and how it works

How the US butter stick maps to cups, tablespoons, ounces and grams, why 113.4 grams is the anchor, and how to convert any amount.

The one number every butter conversion hangs on

In the US, butter is molded into rectangular sticks, and one stick is the anchor for everything else. A single stick equals half a cup, 8 tablespoons, 4 ounces and 113.4 grams. Four sticks are boxed together as one pound, which is 453.6 grams. Once you know that a stick is 113.4 grams, you can reach any other unit by scaling from that single reference weight rather than memorizing a dozen separate pairs.

Reading the wrapper and the tablespoon marks

Most US butter wrappers print a ruler down the length of the stick, marked in tablespoons and often in fractions of a cup. Because a stick is 8 tablespoons, each printed mark is one tablespoon, so cutting at the fourth line gives you 4 tablespoons, or a quarter cup. That printed scale is handy for whole-tablespoon amounts, but it cannot help when a recipe is written in grams, which is exactly where converting through the 113.4 gram anchor takes over.

Why grams and sticks rarely divide evenly

Recipes written outside the US usually give butter in grams, and those amounts were chosen to be round in grams, not in sticks. A common 250 gram block is not a whole number of sticks: it works out to about 2.204586 sticks or 1.102293 cups. That is normal. For cooking you can round to a friendly amount, but the converter keeps the full six-decimal value so scaling a recipe up or down does not drift off target with each step.

Converting in either direction

The tool treats grams as the common ground between units. It turns your starting amount into grams using the weight of your chosen unit, then divides back out into every other unit at once. That is why you only choose the From unit: sticks, cups, tablespoons, ounces and grams all appear together. Whether you are turning European grams into US cups or turning American sticks into metric grams, the same single pass produces the whole row.
